The Night of the Presidents Heads
Visiting the iconic Presidents Heads during the day can be an exhilirating experience. But being present amongst all 42 of these decaying relics in the dark of the night can be feel otherwordly and downright spooky. Don't miss this opportunity to experience this environment at night with local rural explorers John Plashal and Fred Schneider. You will be escorted to the area of the Heads for a game of Presidential Trivia - followed by a guided walking tour throughout the collection of the creepy and illuminated derelict busts, learning fascinating and often untold stories about several of our former Presidents.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE "EVENING PHOTO SHOOT & LIGHT PAINTING WORKSHOP". THIS IS A FLASHLIGHT TOUR AND STORYTELLING SESSION IN THE DARK. NO TRIPODS ARE ALLOWED.

The Presidents Heads Evening Photo Shoot and Light Painting Workshop
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to photograph these internationally renowned decaying Presidential sculptures while they still reside in our great state of Virginia. With full permission from the landowner, we will have a 4 hour window to photograph these magically derelict artifacts in low light. You will register on the property, sign a waiver form, then have 60 minutes of leisurely twilight shooting time before, during and after sunset - amongst only 9 other photographers. When darkness sets in, you will participate in a light painting workshop by Jimmy Powell from the Stellar Media Group, followed by 60 minutes of leisurely shooting on your own. To get the most out of the experience, we recommend the following:
* INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED SKILLS IN NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY ARE CRUCIAL. BEING ABLE TO GAIN MANUAL FOCUS IN THE DARK, TO CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS ON THE FLY, TO SHOOT IN BULB MODE AND TO OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT ASSISTANCE IS IMPERATIVE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS EXPERIENCE. THOSE THAT REGISTER FOR THIS WORKSHOP USUALLY HAVE FULL FRAME CAMERAS, A NICE, STURDY TRIPOD AND PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE WITH NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY.
* Tripod - REQUIRED
* The widest angle lens you have (14mm-16mm is ideal)
* A shutter release cable or wireless shutter release trigger and a familiarity with shooting in BULB mode - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
* A working knowledge of your camera settings, particularly knowing how to change your aperture and ISO quickly between shots
Our light painting guide will provide detailed instructions on adjusting your camera settings to the different types of illuminations that he offers and will allow attendees to participate with manipulation of pixel sticks, orb tools, tubes, light painting blades, etc. as long as you wear dark clothes.
There is a chance of muddy or wet conditions in the area in which you will be shooting. Plan accordingly with your footwear and clothes.
You will need to bring all of your own traditional camera gear as none of that will be provided (with the exception of the light painting tools that Jimmy utilizes).
At the landowner's request, you will also need to sign a Waiver of Liability form that was mutually accepted upon by himself and John Plashal Photo, LLC.
Be certain of your availabilty to attend this event prior to registration in that the only situations in which full refunds will be offered are due to a cancellation due to inclement weather.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THIS PROPERTY ON YOUR OWN ACCORD. THERE ARE SECURITY CAMERAS AND MOTION SENSORS EVERYWHERE. YOU MAY GET ARRESTED.
FAQs
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Please arrive at Hampton Roads Materials at 8212 Croaker Road in Williamsburg, Va. in time for our 7PM orientation. Drive to the end of the long driveway and park near the trailer on the left. I will be there to assist you.
What can I bring into the event?
Apart from all of your own photo gear, I would recommend a folding chair, footwear that can get ruined, plenty of batteries, lens cloths and a backup rig if you have one. I will be providing a cooler full of waters. Jimmy provides light painting gear for the workshop but you should have your own high lumen flashlights, etc. for when you shoot on your own.
What is a Buddy Pass? This pass is designed for guests of the photography workshop participants. While these guests are welcome to shoot with their cell phones during twilight, they may not bring nor use handheld cameras. Three passes only have been made available.
I am traveling from afar. Is there a place to stay nearby for the night?
Williamsburg is 10 minutes away and has plenty of overnight accommodations that fit all budgets.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Please contact John Plashal at "thepresidentsheads@gmail.com" with any questions.
Will I have time to shoot exclusively with just ambient light?
Yes you will. We leave about 60 minutes at the end of the evening for solo shooting with no external light sources.
What's the refund policy?
Be certain of your availability to attend prior to registering. Refunds will ONLY be issued if the shoot is cancelled due to inclement weather or poor attendance/registration. We do have a very low threshold for cancellation should precipitation or high winds be forecasted. An e-mail will be sent out to all registered guests 48 hours prior to the event with an update on the weather. In the event of a cancellation, you will be fully refunded and will have the ability to register for a future workshop.

FAQ's
Where will this event be held? At the location of the Presidents Heads, which is at 8212 Croaker Rd. in Williamsburg, Va. The name of the business is Hampton Roads Materials. Parking instructions will be sent with the guest e-mail that is distributed a few days prior to the event.
Why is there a difference in the ticket prices? The morning pass is less expensive than the afternoon pass because, in the event of a sunny day, the Heads are back lit in the morning, which could be problematic for photographers. The Heads become front lit by 1PM. The premium for the Early Evening session is due to the desirable light and chance for dramatic sunset at the end of the day.
What is an "All Day Pass" ? This pass entitles you to access to the Heads for the entire day, from 9AM-5:30PM. You may stay for the duration of the day or come and go as you please.
How and when will I be notified of the specifics and logisitics of the program? An e-mail will be sent to the address used to register, beginning about a week before the event. This will cover all of the specifics you will want and need to know. Event information is also frequently posted at @John Plashal Photo on Facebook and Instagram.
What is the refund policy? Refunds are accepted up until 48 hours prior to the beginning of the first event of the day. No refunds will be accepted if requested within 48 hours of the first event of the day. ALL REFUNDS MUST BE REQUESTED THROUGH EVENTBRITE.
Is the general session that I registered for two hours in duration? The event is NOT two hours long, rather a two hour window of opportunity for you to visit. That being said, you will receive an itinerary in an e-mail prior to the event with the scheduled times of the Presidential Trivia and Storytelling sessions. It is up to you if want to participate in those sessions.
Is there anything special that I need to bring? Sometimes the area around the Heads can be somewhat wet or muddy, in which case rain boots or hiking boots will be highly recommended. The e-mail that goes out to all registrants prior to the event will offer an update on those conditions so you can be prepared with proper footwear. We conduct optional back to back speaking sessions during each time slot. Many of our guests prefer to sit down during these talks. If you fall into that category, then bring a folding chair or something to sit on.
I am a photographer. Can I take pictures or fly a drone? Yes. Photography and videography is allowed as long as etiquette is exercised. Drones may NOT be flown during the speaking sessions.
I am a professional photographer and would like to bring a lighting rig and/or a model with me for a shoot. Is this allowed? No it is not. No lighting rigs or professional model shoots are allowed during this event.
Do you conduct this program if it is raining? Yes. Unless it is forecasted to be sustained and heavy. We have a high threshold for cancellation out of respect to those that spend days traveling to the area in anticipation of this highly unique experience. Many guests actually prefer rainy and moody weather as it lends to the eerieness of the locale.
Can I buy tickets on the spot? Only if the event is not sold out. We abide by state COVID mandates and have attendance limitations with which we comply.
What ages encompass a YOUTH TICKET? Ages 8-17 require a YOUTH TICKET. Ages 7 and under are free and are listed as a CHILD TICKET.
Are there bathrooms on the property? Yes. There are portable toilets on the property.

The Presidents Heads Evening Photo Shoot and Light Painting Workshop
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to photograph these internationally renowned decaying Presidential sculptures while they still reside in our great state of Virginia. With full permission from the landowner, we will have a 4.5 hour window to photograph these magically derelict artifacts in low light.
* Tripod - REQUIRED
